10 Steps to Reaching your Goals

Thoughts and inspiration

1) Be Positive

One of the most difficult things for many people to do is remain positive. We are conditioned toward the negative. When you look at the news, what makes the headlines, even most television shows, it is true that the dramatic, sad, profoundly intense is always readily available to us. As a result, we are often numb to what these things really do to our spirit. If you made the decision to stay away from television, music and the news for even just two weeks, you will most likely find that you are a bit more sensitive to seeing and hearing certain things. It is important that you continually immerse yourself in positive things. Read things that are positive, watch television that makes you “feel good” when you walk away from them. Listen to songs that uplift and produce joy in our heart. Being positive is one of the things that will make a HUGE difference in how quickly you move toward accomplishing your goal.

2) Remember that you are a new creation

Cor 5:17 Therefore if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new creation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come!

As a Christian you are not the person you used to be. In fact, every day that you wake up, you are new again! This doesn’t mean that you feel new, this doesn’t mean that you suddenly make all of the right decisions or do all the right things. What it means is that you must remember that you have access to God in a whole new way. You no longer have to be blind to what God has in mind. You are a part of the family, a joint heir with Jesus Christ himself! WOW! You no longer have to rely on your old ways of thinking. You can CHOOSE to do things differently than you ever did before. You are a NEW CREATION!!! Expect to be not only different, expect to be better.

3) Be willing to show your commitment

If you want to accomplish your goals, you will have to WORK to do it. The larger and more complex the goal, the more you may have to work. Do not make the mistake of believing that just because God called you to it, doesn’t mean that your sweat less victory will come without work on your part. Be willing to show up when no one else will. Those that come to help you accomplish your goal will measure their commitment level according to yours.

4) Have a very strong raison d’etre

Raison d’etre is a French phrase that simply means “reason for being”. Christ’s raison d’etre can be found in John 10:10

10 The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows).

Your goal must have a reason that it exists. You may have heard this before as a “strong reason why”. I prefer a reason for existing simply because we can determine a “why?” for just about anything. Your reason for your goal is what will drive you to accomplish it when everything else is failing all around you and you feel that you need to stop. There has to be something within you that says – “But I must do this”.

Your reason will also be the ready answer at your lips when people inquire about your passion for your goal. People love to find out why a person is successful and when you cross the finish line you can expect someone to say “Why did you do this?” or “What kept you going?” Keep working to discover your reason until you have one that doesn’t fail you….but have one. You will need it when the time comes.

5) Learn to recognized God’s prompting

God speaks to us all in different ways. For some, it could be a sign, others through scripture, others an inward knowing and some others additional ways. How God chooses to speak to you isn’t important. Recognizing his voice is what is key. If you don’t already know how to recognize God’s voice, make it a point of prayer for yourself immediately. Find ways to add quiet time with God into your day DAILY and learn how He speaks to you. God may use 1 way or many ways – He will always speak to His children. Know when He is prompting you, leading you, speaking to you. Discovering His path for you is always the best.

6) Develop a precept by precept strategy of execution

Dictionary.com offers this definition for strategy: a plan, method, or series of maneuvers or stratagems for obtaining a specific goal or result

God has a strategy for everything. Gen 6 tells how Noah was to build the ark. 2 Chronicles 3 tells how the temple was to be built. Joshua 6 tells how Joshua was to win the war of Jericho. Even Christ could not die until all that was told of the Messiah was fulfilled. God does not change and he has a strategy for the plan of your life. Work with God and develop a step by step plan for your goal. Don’t do it in your own might, but rather allow Him to use the knowledge you have to complete the plan.

7) Be willing to take risks

Most people that have reached some form of super rock star status in their field has done so because they have taken risks. I’m not talking about jumping from an airplane without a parachute, I’m talking about strategic, calculated, “I’m going for it” risk. Christopher Columbus was a risk taker. He traveled the ocean waters during a time when it was believed that the earth was flat! Ultimately discovering that there was more world than previously known. There are many great people in the bible that were risk takers. Look at Paul. He was originally a Pharisee that hunted and killed those that followed Christ. After his conversion he traveled into the same towns professing the very name that he condemned. Taking a risk develops self-esteem and self-confidence. It also teaches you what it right or wrong.

8) Spend time with quality people

I always tell my clients if they are the smartest person they know they need some new friends. If you are surrounded by people that you are always giving to (in one way or another) eventually you will end up drained and burned out. I call these people “anointing suckers”. It’s find to give, but not at the expense of giving what you need for yourself. Do you have friends on your level that you can call peers? This is important because this is the community of people that you will lead with. And those that are smarter? Or those that have accomplished what you are striving for? Well in addition to leading with them, you will be fed, energized and challenged by them.

9) Be willing to invest in continual education

When I say invest, I’m talking about money AND time. And as for education – yes, the academic institutions conferring degrees is great, however education comes in a myriad of forms. There are a wealth of seminars and webinars given by experts all across the world that will help you increase your knowledge. Some of this information is free, some not…the point is that it’s available! And with the internet at our fingertips we can ALWAYS learn something. I often use YouTube when searching specific information, however Ted Talks is great for off the cuff topics. A healthy desire to learn and use that information will help you develop informed decisions and
take you far in life.

10) Increase your level of EXPECTATION (Stay Ready)

One way to not only reach your goals but to do so faster is to continually EXPECT to reach them. Alter your EXPECTATION!!! What does this mean? It means cancel your doubt or hope of something to happen and actually believe that it will happen. When you truly believe in something, you actions change. You behave like it’s true even though it isn’t. This belief is called faith, and your actions will begin to make room for what you believe to be true to appear. If you ever had a pet, you know how they behave when they are hungry. They follow you around, sit, stare at you and do what’s necessary to get your attention. When you start preparing their food, they are right at your heels – waiting – expecting you to let them know when they can eat. They are excited, eager, anticipating the meal. This is the behavior of expectation, the true behavior of faith. When you are really expecting something, you make sure you are ready for it. Get Ready, GET Ready, GET READY!!! Your goal is about to be reached!!!
